STAR TREK: "The Once and Future Starship" 8/9/91 - SCENE 3 1.
SCENE 3
FADE IN:
EXT. SPACE - THE TWO ENTERPRISES (OPTICAL)
The two Enterprises continue to orbit the planet as we begin
the voice over.
PICARD (V.O.)
Captain's Log, Stardate 44636.1. We have
received orders from Star Fleet Command to
arrest the survivors of the battle at
Norendra III. It seems the Admiralty is
not convinced of the time travel theory
despite the presence of this alternate
version of Tasha Yar.
INT. BRIDGE BRIEFING ROOM (OPTICAL)
PICARD, RIKER, WORF, DATA, GEORDIE, YAR and CASTILLE sit in the
main bridge briefing lounge. The planet can be seen out the
wide curving windows and perhaps the Enterprise-C as well.
PICARD (V.O.)
I have assembled my senior staff and the
senior staff of the Enterprise-C to plan
our next steps.
YAR
I can't believe Star Fleet is doing this to
us.
RIKER
I think the Admiralty hasn't been the same
since the Borg incident.
CASTILLE
The Borg?
Picard raises his hand to get their attention and call the
meeting to order. He is no happier than Riker and the others
about the turn of events.
PICARD
That's a long story and one that isn't
relevant to the current proceedings.
(Picard pulls down his shirt)
What I need are options.
(a beat)
Anyone?
DATA
We have no options, Captain. Star Fleet
Regulations Paragraph . . .
RIKER
(interupting)
Data, Captain Picard and the rest of the
people in this room are well aware of the
regulations. Strictly speaking what these
people did could be construed as mutiny.
WORF
They are not mutineers, they are warriors.
Those who defend Klingons against the
attack of honorless Romulans are heros!
Yar is still uncomfortable with Worf, but she acknowledges his
comment with a nod.
DATA
Nonetheless, our next step must be to
confine the survivors aboard the
Enterprise.
(a beat)
However, since we are not within normal
cruising distance of a starbase, you do
have the authority to call for a formal
Inquiry Board on the Enterprise. Such a
Board may be used to clear the defendants
if it is found that no general court
martial is warranted.
PICARD
That is an excellent idea, Mr. Data.
(to Riker)
See to it, Number One.
RIKER
Aye, Sir.
PICARD
(to Worf)
Meanwhile, Mr. Worf, assemble a security
team and beam down to the surface. See to
it that all the survivors are transported
aboard the Enterprise.
Worf's eyes are aflame as he answers in a deep rumble.
WORF
Yes, Captain.
PICARD
(to Yar and Castille)
How many survivors are there?
CASTILLE
Thirty crew and ten children. The oldest
is our daughter, Rachel, shes 21 years old,
not a child anymore. The other children
range from sixteen down to five years old.
PICARD
I'm not about to throw children into the
Brig. Nor am I going to separate families.
Will confinement to a holodeck be
satisfactory?
YAR
That would be more than generous, Captain.
PICARD
Let's proceed then, the sooner we get this
nonsense over with the better.
The meeting breaks up and they all depart, Picard remains
seated staring out at the planet.
INT. TRANSPORTER ROOM (OPTICAL)
O'Brien is at the console, two security persons are posted at
either side of the doorway. Tasha and Castille are standing in
front of the console facing the platform.
O'BRIEN
This is the last group.
He energizes the transporter and six figures take shape on the
platform, Worf, another security officer and the last four
survivors, including Rachel Castille. Rachel looks around the
chamber then spots her parents and runs to her father's arms.
The security officer leads the others out of the room. Worf
waits for the Castille family.
CASTILLE
There you are, Bunny!
RACHEL
Oh, Poppa, you know how I hate that name!
(a beat)
How are you?
CASTILLE
I'm . . . we're fine! They've taken good
care of us. Captain Picard is on our side,
I think, but he has his orders.
YAR
Rachel, dear, don't I get a hug?
Rachel ignores her.
RACHEL
So this is the new Enterprise . . . nice.
CASTILLE
Rachel, say hello to your mother.
Rachel goes to Tasha and gives her one of those off the cheek
fake kisses. Worf has had enough, he motions to them to leave.
WORF
Come, I will escort you to the holodeck.
They turn and leave the room.
INT. HOLODECK 3 - EARTH SCENE DAY (OPTICAL)
The holodeck is set to display a pleasant old Earth scene with
lots of trees and grass, we hear the holodeck door open. We
see several young children running and playing, in the distance
are some buildings. The kids love it. Tasha, Castille and
Rachel walk into the scene. Rachel is awed by the scene.
RACHEL
Oh my, what is all this, Poppa? Is it
real?
CASTILLE
It's Earth, Rachel, or at least a
simulation of what Earth used to be like.
RACHEL
This is where you were born?
CASTILLE
Well, not exactly, but close enough. Earth
hasn't been this open and plush for many
years, but parts of it are still this nice.
At least it was the last time I was there.
RACHEL
This is wonderful. I'm going to check out
the living quarters and order myself
something to eat, maybe even chocolate!
Rachel runs away toward the buildings leaving Yar and Castille
alone. They stand admiring the scene for a moment.
YAR
She's up to something, Richard. She's been
laying it on pretty thick since she got
here.
CASTILLE
Come on, Tasha, she's been couped up on our
little planet for a long time. Let her
explore.
(a beat)
Besides, we have more important things to
worry about. We need to meet with the
others and start working on our defense.
Yar nods her agreement then they clasp hands and walk toward
the buildings in the distance.
INT. MAIN ENGINEERING
GEORDIE LA FORGE is working on some instruments in a shadowy
corner of Main Engineering. He is reading some panel, then
turns and comes face to face with WORF, who has walked up
behind him. Geordie is startled.
LA FORGE
Geez, Worf, you'
